STUDENTS DISCOVER THEIR INNER ARTIST IN THE "FIND THE ART IN SWEETARTS"
CONTEST
Schools Combine Inspiration and Teamwork to Compete for a Sweet Prize of $10,000
GLENDALE, Calif. (July 24, 2002) If a picture can paint a thousand words, imagine the stories that can be told through giant murals, sculptures and other works of art created by children across the country. NESTLÉ SWEETARTS is inspiring students to use their imagination, along with a little paint, glue, and some colorful SWEETARTS pastel candy pieces to construct a life-size work of art as part of the "Find the Art in SweeTARTS… and Discover the Artist in YOU" national art contest. While all of the entries are sure to be masterpieces, one grand-prize winning school will be rewarded $10,000, and five schools will receive a $5,000 first-place prize.
The contest is part of the Nestlé SweeTARTS ArtSMART program, designed to enhance art appreciation for students in grades 3-8. In an effort to encourage artistic expression and education, Nestlé SweeTARTS is providing free student activity magazines with fun art history lessons on various art topics to participating elementary and middle schools. Teachers will also be provided with a complete teacher's guide to help the entire class work together on a unified project. Schools will receive assorted samples of Nestlé SweeTARTS to enjoy and use in the creation of their contest entry, while building an appreciation for the art found in everyday life.
"The 'Find the Art in SweeTARTS' contest is designed to inspire confidence, creativity and self-expression through the medium of art," said Tricia Bowles, Manager of Public Relations, Nestlé Confections & Snacks. "The goal is to reward students for working together on a project that brings to life their collective vision through the creation of a masterpiece they can be proud to call their own."
Riverside Elementary School in Shreveport, Louisiana won last year's $10,000 grand prize. Ten-year-old Carmen Ortiz's "SweeTARTS land" drawing was transformed into a 3-foot sculpture that eventually won the grand prize for her school. The papier-mâché sculpture features two students (one of which is Ortiz) in a SweeTARTS candyland preparing to paint a masterpiece. All surfaces from the grass to the flowers and even the students' artist smocks are adorned in colorful SweeTARTS candy pieces.
To enter, each participating school must create a full-size mural, sculpture or other work of art that best represents the combined efforts of the students. Schools must submit a 5X7 photo of the artwork, along with the name of the school, school district, school address, a contact name and phone number and a brief description of the entry including anything unique or special about how the project was created and how many students participated. Entry must be submitted and postmarked by January 31, 2003 and received no later than February 14, 2003. All materials should be sent to Kaleidoscope, "FIND THE ART IN SWEETARTS" P.O. Box 21660, Charleston, SC 29413. Entries will be judged equally on creativity/originality, use of color, incorporation of the SweeTARTS logo, colors or actual product, and effort. Only one entry is allowed per school. For rules and questions regarding contest entry, schools can call 877-853-1494. Students and teachers can also check out www.wonka.com to find art activities; download the student activity magazines; and view pictures of past contest winners.
