FIRST PLACE WINNERS
Brandon Elementary School in Brandon, Miss.

Nearly 1,000 students contributed skill, imagination and even SweeTARTS candy to create a masterpiece in the form of a 6-ft. by 13-ft. mural now proudly displayed in the school’s cafeteria. Rather than just using paint, every class at Brandon Elementary School was assigned a section of the larger mural to decorate and students brought hundreds of multicolored items to add color to the artwork. Vibrant beads, hair barrettes, feathers, small toys and SweeTARTS candy added to the overall collaborative effect. The colorful and intricate mural features two students in a vivid classroom setting filled with books, the school mascot, a large chalkboard and bright paintings.

Cedarhurst Elementary School in Seattle, Wash.
More than 50 students created the Andy Warhol inspired pop art that includes student photos decorated like Warhol’s Maryiln Monroe portraits and screened with SweeTARTS colors. Students spent one month, from conception to finish, to complete the 5 ft. by 12 ft. mural. Students expressed their individuality by interpreting the colors to match their personalities and learned to transform everyday images of themselves into new and exciting works of art.

Nathanael Greene Middle School in Providence, R.I.
The Salvador Dali inspired entry features a woman gazing out of a window on rainy day. The students drew the window on a SweeTARTS wall where the use of the packaging in the background lent itself to an expressive motif. The images also feature the signature “Dali” like melted clock signifying time passing and the woman’s imagination wandering and thinking about creating. This is entirely appropriate as the students beat the clock to enter the contest, deciding to enter just two weeks before the deadline.

North Wayne Elementary School in Indianapolis, Ind.
The “under the sea” themed mural spans an entire classroom wall and is made almost entirely out of construction paper. The mural features a scuba diver discovering a treasure chest bursting with SweeTARTS candy at the bottom of the ocean as it lays nestled amongst several sea creatures including sea turtles and sea anenomes. Students in the Art Club worked after school for several months creating the masterpiece, which is now proudly displayed in the school’s art gallery. The students had such a great time creating the SweeTARTS mural, they have already begun work on a second school mural.

Reilly Elementary School in Austin, Tex.
The mural, titled “Dare to Dream,” features more than 6,000 SweeTARTS glued “impressionist style” to a 4 ft. X 6 ft. piece of plexiglass. The multi-colored mural is emblazoned with the words, “Dare to Dream,” and other abstract figures including a child and flowers. Nearly 100 students, third through fifth grade, developed the concept and worked for three weeks to complete the entry.
